Terme di Saturnia

Terme di Saturnia, with its 18-hole golf course designed by Ronald Fream, is probably one of the most unique golf destinations I have had the pleasure of visiting in Europe. A bold claim? Perhaps. But the combination of golf and natural thermal baths with healing properties, which were already enjoyed by the Romans 3,000 years ago, makes this place unique.

Terme di Saturnia is particularly notable for its natural sulphur thermal pools. It is surrounded by the hotel complex, which is nestled in the picturesque landscape of the Tuscan Maremma.

According to legend, Saturn, the god of peace and abundance, lost patience with the constant warfare of humans. He then hurled a thunderbolt at the earth, causing hot, sulphurous water to gush forth from the earth’s interior. This water flowed through valleys and plains, calming the spirits of the people and heralding the beginning of a golden age dedicated to agriculture, hunting and love.

The heart of the hotel is the thermal water that has been bubbling continuously from a crater for 3,000 years at a temperature of 37.5 °C. This temperature has a positive effect on immediate muscle relaxation and symptoms in bones and joints. This healing power has a noticeable effect, especially before and after golfing. The thermal water of Saturnia contains sulphur, carbon dioxide, sulphate and alkaline earth bicarbonate. Sulphur has a positive effect on:

➡️ THE HEART AND CIRCULATION BY DILATING THE BLOOD VESSELS IN THE SKIN AND LOWERING BLOOD PRESSURE

➡️ THE MUSCLES AND BONES WITH A MUSCLE-RELAXING AND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY EFFECT THE LIVER WITH A STRONG PROTECTIVE AND PURIFYING EFFECT

➡️ THE LIVER WITH A STRONG PROTECTIVE AND PURIFYING EFFECT

➡️ IN THE RESPIRATORY TRACT, CARBON DIOXIDE (CO₂) DEEPENS BREATHING AND INCREASES LUNG VENTILATION

In addition, thermal plankton forms naturally in the water, creating an invaluable biogenic treasure trove of natural minerals and nitrogenous substances, rich in amino acids, sulphur, potassium and magnesium, and endowed with exceptional anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and regenerative properties. Its effects and tolerability have been proven at the most renowned Italian university centres. These algae and their extracts have been tested for their radical scavenging activity and have been shown to be antioxidants.

Terme di Saturnia has developed spa treatments specifically tailored to golfers in its spa area: In combination with the healing thermal waters, they make the hotel with its 18-hole golf course a special and unique golf destination – especially when the cold and wet season sets in. In addition to numerous treatments, I recommend the TdS BODY MUD TONIFYING 50 min treatment for cleansing and relaxation, as well as the SATURNIA DEEP MASSAGE to loosen tense shoulders and arm muscles.

I was totally surprised by how the Golf & Spa package affected my golf game. Especially bathing in the thermal pools at Terme di Saturnia. The relaxing effect on muscles and joints is like a fountain of youth for a golfer’s body. You can feel how flexible you are and how smooth your swing is when playing golf. I can warmly recommend the ➡️ Golf & Spa package, which has been specially developed for golfers.

The hotel itself, with 128 luxury rooms, is nestled in the charming hilly landscape, vineyards and olive groves of Tuscany. It is located near the small town of Saturnia, easily accessible from Rome Fiumicino Airport in about 1.5 hours. The reception area and the entire hotel are stylishly furnished. The staff is exceptionally friendly and competent. The quiet, relaxed atmosphere of the Terme di Saturnia is particularly pleasant. From the elegant reception area to the spacious rooms, everything here is very clean and tidy. The short distances from the rooms to the thermal pools or the first tee of the golf course are another big plus.

The hotel offers numerous free activities every day for your well-being. Whether it’s e-biking, guided hikes, or golf lessons on the hotel’s own driving range with 43 tees, you’re guaranteed never to be bored. But first, start the day with an incredibly varied and delicious breakfast, from freshly squeezed juice to a custom-made omelet or Italian specialties.

The highlight for golfers, however, is the 18-hole championship golf course designed by Ronald Fream in 2008. With its 6,316 metres spread over 70 hectares, this golf course is one of the few Italian courses to have received GEO certification. The 18 holes are fabulous and blend harmoniously into the picturesque landscape of the Tuscan Maremma. The course is very varied and requires some golfing skill if you are playing for score. The individual holes are not usually relatively long, but the small, fast greens are challenging when you attack them. With so many doglegs, GIR often feels like a par. Personally, I find the Terme di Saturnia golf course super exciting and varied, especially if you play it several times and have developed a game plan. As a signature hole, I would choose the 10th, a par 4 that is 367 metres long from the yellow tees and 302 metres from the red tees, and with a HCP of 1, the most difficult hole on the golf course. A good drive or a perfect 3-wood is essential to have a chance at par. The long, well-defended green leaves no room for mistakes. The dried-out riverbed, which has been skilfully incorporated into the design of this hole, creates the impression of an island green, which is also defended by large bunkers on the right and left. Even a bogey is a top score on this hole. The golf course, combined with the spa and Restaurant 1919, is a unique combination for golfers seeking to escape the cold and wet weather of our latitudes.

1919 Restaurant makes a day at Terme di Saturnia complete. After a round of golf in the morning and a relaxing day in the healing sulphur thermal pools or a spa treatment, there is nothing better than enjoying the delicious cuisine of executive chef Salvatore Quatro at the hotel Restaurant 1919.
The oldest ‘pied dans l’eau’ restaurant in the Maremma will not let you go to bed hungry. Every dish is finely seasoned and a real treat for the palate. There is also an extensive selection of white and red wines from the region to complement each dish to perfection.

Trattoria La Stellata provides variety. Nestled among the fairytale hills of the golf course is a typical Tuscan farmhouse with an enchanting panoramic view, home to the traditional Tuscan Trattoria La Stellata, where you will be treated to typical Tuscan dishes.

I highly recommend a trip to the Tuscan Maremma and the charming village of Pitigliano with its extraordinary location and history, followed by a wine tasting at the Fattoria Aldobrandesca. The 2024 Vivia white wine is really very highly recommended. Of course, the Nigrens tastes as good as it does in Tuscany, but I could also imagine enjoying a bottle of this fine wine at home.

In summary, I can highly recommend Terme di Saturnia. To fully enjoy the exceptional and extensive range of spa, thermal bath, golf and culinary offerings in Tuscany, I would recommend a stay of at least four days to a week.

These are special offers developed for us golfers by Terme di Saturnia — perhaps one of them is right for you.
